Vercelli. Broletto and Piazza Cavour
Pubblicato : Lundi, 5 février, 2024 - 13:07
Seat of the Municipality from 1200 until the early 19th century, the Broletto was where town assemblies were held and justice administered. The Torre Comunale (Municipal Tower), which dates back to the 13th century, remains as a testimony to this. The square is characterised by the typical porticos of northern cities, which entirely surround it. Its peculiarity is that it has two types of porticoes: those with pointed arches dating back to the 13th-14th centuries and the others, in terracotta, from the Renaissance period.

Vercelli. Basilica of St Andrew
Pubblicato : Dimanche, 4 février, 2024 - 13:52
Built between 1219 and 1227, it is certainly the city's most precious jewel. Few Italian architectural works can boast such a strong resemblance to French Gothic. In it, elements of the Romanesque tradition and new European Gothic influences blend beautifully. The Franco-Burgundian influence is clearly visible in the two towers, flanking the façade, and in the octagonal-shaped tiburium. The interior, on the other hand, is in the shape of a Latin cross, while the choir is rectangular.

San Nazzaro Sesia. Abbey of Saints Nazario and Celso
Pubblicato : Samedi, 3 février, 2024 - 15:22
Founded between 1040 and 1053, the abbey represents one of the most significant monastic complexes in Piedmont. It consists of walls with circular corner turrets, a high Romanesque bell tower, a Lombard Gothic church and an elegant cloister with a 15th-century cycle of frescoes dedicated to the stories of St Benedict. The situation in the area during the 13th century was rather unstable and dangerous, and so the Abbey, a rather unusual case for lowland complexes, was fortified by surrounding it with a moat and walls strengthened by mighty corner towers, thus transforming it into a shelter for the villagers. Here, the massive bell tower not only had a defensive function, but also represented the last, extreme shelter in case of siege.

Established as a centre for the reproduction and study of endangered animal species, the park is a protected area of about 40 hectares, where the forest opens up into clearings frequented by roe deer, foxes, beech martens, reptiles, marsh harriers and other bird species. Special attention is paid to the Italian and European fauna and to the most rare feline species in the world today. In order not to disturb the wildlife of the species housed, a part of the park is not accessible to visitors, thus allowing them to get to know and see the animals while also respecting their space.

Sanctuary of Boca
Pubblicato : Mardi, 30 janvier, 2024 - 15:06
Hidden amidst woods and meadows, far from the town and accessible only by a secondary road, it is yet another local work by the architect Antonelli, famous for the Mole Antonelliana in Turin and the Cupola di San Gaudenzio in Novara. Based on a much grander project than the one that has come down to us, the majestic building, although in its extreme essentiality, stands out for its heavy physical presence, in stark contrast to the surrounding landscape of few houses and much nature.
