Novara. Piazza delle Erbe
Pubblicato : Tuesday, 16 January, 2024 - 13:41
Surrounded by arcaded houses, it takes the form of a triangular space, the western apex of which leads to the Piazza del Duomo. In the Middle Ages, it housed the butchers', shoemakers' and merchants' stalls, which made this trading area the centre of town life. In 1506, the square was restructured, the wooden and terracotta columns replaced with serizzo tiles, until an effect not too dissimilar to today was achieved, with rows of arcades with round arches.

Novara. Visconti-Sforza Castle
Pubblicato : Monday, 15 January, 2024 - 19:59
During the rule of the Visconti family, a castle was erected on the site of an earlier fortification. Major changes were made in the 15th century, during the rule of Galeazzo Sforza, who erected a large wall and turned it into a real strategic stronghold. Reused as a prison until its abandonment in the 1970s, it was only in 2016 that it was recovered from decades of disuse. Today it houses the Archaeological Museum, the Civic Collection as well as spaces for fairs, exhibitions and special events.

Coccia Theatre
Pubblicato : Monday, 15 January, 2024 - 15:16
This city pride is not only the main opera house in Novara, but also the most important 'historic' theatre in the entire region of Piedmont. At the end of the 19th century, the previous building that stood here no longer met the city's needs. So it was demolished to create a new one, dedicated to Carlo Coccia, composer and director of the newly founded Novara music school. The interior of the hall, with excellent acoustics, is horseshoe-shaped with four orders ending with the gallery.

Novara. Baptistery
Pubblicato : Sunday, 14 January, 2024 - 22:17
Saved from the renovation of the square by Antonelli, it stands right in front of Novara Cathedral, in the small courtyard protected by the elegant colonnade. The oldest monument in the city, the early Christian building dates back to the 4th-5th centuries AD. Inside, with an octagonal base, rectangular and semicircular chapels alternate and ancient frescoes illustrating scenes from the Apocalypse (9th century) and the Last Judgement (15th century) are still visible.

Novara. Dome
Pubblicato : Sunday, 14 January, 2024 - 09:45
The history of this building is very old; a basilica stood here already around the year 350 AD. It was later destroyed and rebuilt in the 11th-12th centuries, and it too was remodelled and modified several times. Its current form is the work of the 19th century architect Antonelli, already the author of the Dome of San Gaudenzio in Novara and the Mole Antonelliana in Turin. All that remains of the previous Romanesque cathedral is the mosaic in the presbytery. Inside are valuable paintings by Bernardino Lanino and Gaudenzio Ferrari.

This cosy and elegant courtyard represents the ancient heart of the city. The mediaeval complex consists of four buildings erected in different eras, offering architectural, decorative and artistic elements that differ from one another. The Palazzo dell'Arengo, with its round arches, as well as the Palazzo dei Paratici (city guilds) with its elegant portico and loggia, date back to the 13th century. While Palazzo del Podestà and Palazzo della Referendaria are from the late 14th to early 15th century.

Novara. Basilica of San Gaudenzio and Antonelliana Dome
Pubblicato : Saturday, 13 January, 2024 - 16:30
The work of Antonelli, the architect of Turin's Mole Antonelliana, the Dome of San Gaudenzio is the symbol par excellence of the city of Novara. Entering the city from different directions, the 19th-century dome is clearly visible towering from above. Strangely, rising in a maze of narrow streets, it is often better seen from a distance than from close up. The rest of the basilica, on the other hand, is of much more recent construction (17th century), and preserves valuable Baroque works, especially in its chapels.
